March 16 – The Philippine Star printed an article written by our intern, Rica Fernandez, about the CareerCamp at LCCM. Congrats, Rica!
March 17 – We were at De La Salle University’s Taft Avenue campus to meet Communication Arts students. They wanted to know more about careers in public relations, events management, video/TV/film production, and freelancing. We introduced them to PR practitioner Amy Mosura, publicist Carissa Villacorta, TV producer Alia Vargas, and film producer Rai Kintanar.

March 19 – We were guest speaker at Gear Up, an internship orientation event for the UP Diliman College of Mass Communication’s Journalism majors. We talked about how to tackle the job application process (if you want to be an intern), and what to expect if you intend to work as an intern at a newspaper.

By the way, we’re looking for interns too!

Now for some rest, and some prepping for next school year…

I was at Discovery Suites Ortigas before 7:30 AM because I was the first speaker at "Lex Seminarium and CareerCamp," a practicum orientation seminar for San Beda Manila's Legal Management juniors.

After a quick coffee and bagel (fuel for the career speaker), I spoke for about an hour, giving the students 10 tips to avoid becoming the "annoying applicant" that every HR practitioner, hiring manager, and recruiter encounters at least once a day. Loved that the students were dressed to impress, going corporate with their blazers, skirts, ties, suspenders and all. Some were a little too dressy, but that's another talk entirely!

I was at Discovery Suites Ortigas before 7:30 AM because I was the first speaker at “Lex Seminarium and CareerCamp,” a practicum orientation seminar for San Beda Manila’s Legal Management juniors.

After a quick coffee and bagel (fuel for the career speaker), I spoke for about an hour, giving the students 10 tips to avoid becoming the “annoying applicant” that every HR practitioner, hiring manager, and recruiter encounters at least once a day. Loved that the students were dressed to impress, going corporate with their blazers, skirts, ties, suspenders and all. Some were a little too dressy, but that’s another talk entirely!

The best part of any CareerCamp talk is always, always the Q&A section at the end. The San Beda crowd thankfully stepped up with interesting questions that added more to the discussion than my slides did. One question was, “What’s the one thing we should remember from this talk, in case we forget everything by the time we start applying for internships?”

My answer was, in a nutshell: Remember that you’re supposed to present the best version of yourself at an interview. That means you show up on time, you’re well-groomed, you’ve done your research, and you’re ready to talk about yourself.

Then I was given a lovely gift by Yadj Juanico (practicum coordinator) and Atty. Balboa-Cahig (department head). This was followed by Atty. EJ Baranda’s session, which we organized as part of CareerCamp as well.

Good luck to everyone and I hope you find internships that lead to wonderful careers.

We’ve been hearing a LOT of “annoying applicant” stories from hiring managers lately! But we realized that in many cases, nobody gets to tell these applicants what they did wrong — so they end up being an “annoying applicant” over and over again. We wrote an article about it, and now it’s up on EdgeWise.PH:

Applying for your first job? Three newbie mistakes to avoid
Despite being a qualified and hard worker, there are still many reasons why you might not get that job you’re applying for. Some of those reasons could be your fault.

Part of our CareerCamp coaching sessions on resume writing isn’t about resumes at all, but decoding the job description written by the company. This is an ad that is supposed to attract a certain kind of person — and that means the right kind of person has to be familiar enough with the job, and the industry, to understand the job description.

Sometimes these two don’t match: the job description is written too vaguely, or with too much jargon, and it ends up sounding completely unattractive to the exact person who is right for it.

Since we’re trying to have everyone meet in the middle, here are some tips for companies:

- Review the job ad and evaluate if you’ve written it for the right audience (ie for your applicants, not your boss!). Consider asking someone relatively new in the same position to check it out, and see if he/she finds it a good representation of what the job actually is.

- Since you’ve determined the qualifications and educational background of your ideal candidate already, write the description for them. If space is an issue, for an example, you won’t need to define certain terms that people with that kind of experience should know by now. For entry-level positions though, be aware that every term may sound unfamiliar.

- Try to include how the job contributes to the company as a whole. Some applicants are motivated by their prospects for the future, and may be more willing to start a career with you if they know their place in the greater scheme of things. If you would like this kind of person in your team, know that they will likely ignore a job that may seem thankless on paper.
